Looking to go clipless and wondering which type of pedal/cleat combination to get? Well, there ARE different kinds and we're going to say right out that if you are just starting out with clipless pedals you are probably NOT going to go straight onto these, but rather learn the technique of "clipless" riding with a classic SPD pedal/cleat combination. They are the most common kind, and most widely compatible, and probably better suited for beginners.
The Crank Brothers "Eggbeater" patent uses a different type of cleat which clips in downwards much more firmly and prevents any possibility of de-clipping with an upward motion, which is still not completely impossible with SPD pedals/cleats. Also, the catch on the pedal allows for four possible entry points when clipping in, and so saves valuable moments looking for the clip, as can happen with a two-sided SPD design, or even more so with a dual SPD/platform combo (such as I use, cos I am just too chicken!). Another big advantage is that the Eggbeater type has less nooks and crannies for mud to get into - SPD clips can get so clogged that it is impossible to clip into them, and thus the whole effect is lost, and it can even be quite difficult to pedal.
On the downside, you are totally committed if you go for the real Eggbeater type because it is practically impossible to pedal unless you ARE clipped in. So if you are really serious about becoming one with your bike, then these are for you!
