Red in popular culture
Red-heads | Red-heads |
You may not have realised this, but the term red-head actually refers to a person's HAIR, rather than their head, per se!And my, what a lot of cultural baggage there is surrounding people with red hair! If you really want to read up on the subject, then you can do so to your heart's content here, but our goal here at It's Gotta Be Red is first and foremost to defend our colors (actually, just one - red) and extol the virtues of this propitious pigmentation. There must be something desirable about the color red, since henna has been used to dye hair red for millenia. The myth persists (hey, it could be true!) that Mary Magdalene had red hair, though of course this could be more to do with later prejudices and Mary's less-than-salubrious background, since her hair color is not mentioned in the New Testament. Mary Magdalene should be viewed as a positive character - a symbol of a reformed character and transformed life, the proof that people DO change. So nyah! Red hair was fashionable in Elizabethan England, which had a lot to do with the fact that Her Majesty (Elizabeth I) was a red-head herself. The Pre-Raphaelite school of painters had a bit of a thing for red-heads too and in our own time, fictional crime-solving hero Nancy Drew was a red-head. So next time you bad-mouth a red-head, remember, they are in good company - unless you really want to tangle with Nancy Drew... Picture by Polka Dots Fill The Sky. |
