Red motor car insurance and speeding tickets
crashed_red_car.JPG There are some enduring myths relating to red motor cars. Some say that they cost more to insure (or is it less?) and one persistent urban legend claims that red cars are more likely to earn a speeding ticket.

So what is the truth?

Firstly, it might be interesting to theorise why your car being red would affect your insurance premium. The usual claim is that red cars are more likely to be stolen and thus are more expensive to insure, though it is hard to find any statistics to back this up. Perhaps car thieves are strangely attracted to the color red, like a bull to a red rag? Certainly expensive sports cars are more likely to be red, and since they are highly stealable there might be SOME truth to this.

On the other hand, it seems to us that red cars ought to be CHEAPER to insure, since red is highly visible, and thus accidents might be more readily avoided when a red car is involved!

There is obviously some confusion on this subject - Yes Insurance in the UK conducted a survey which indicated that 23% (the highest proportion) of drivers thought that red was the SAFEST car color while the same proportion stated that they thought red was the most DANGEROUS color.

This all smacks of urban legend, and the truth is that insurance companies claim that the color of the car has no bearing on premiums. It is also true that it is cheaper to insure a blue Renault than a red Ferrari, but that would not affect premiums globally.

As for police issuing fines more often to drivers of red cars, well, they are hardly going to admit to that, are they...?

Of course, here at It's Gotta Be Red, red cars rule! Don't leave without checking out our selection of red cars and trucks! And hang the insurance premiums...!
