Red is for winners

Manchester United We have already written on the fact that sporting teams wearing red are more likely to win, all other things being equal (see: Bet on red). This has now been backed up by more research.

The University of Plymouth in the UK discovered that teams wearing red kit were more likely to win at home, to win more points per game and to finish higher in league tables on average than teams wearing other colors.

The author of the study, Professor Martin Attrill, said that the effect was probably due to the association of the color red with agression, which stimulates agression in the wearer, while forcing the opposing player on the defensive. It is also possible that the color red by its nature means that "red" teams like Manchester United, the Red Sox or the Red Wings attract a more "lively" fanbase and therefore become more wealthy and able to buy better players.

But the same results were obtained in a study of boxing and wrestling at the 2004 Athens Olympics by Durham University which showed that players wearing red were significantly more likely to win.

Of course, this has implications for sport in general - non-red teams will cry "unfair" now that the advantage of wearing red on the part of their opponents is known. Perhaps it could even lead to the abolition of the blue and red corners in boxing, and (heaven forbid!) the banning of the color red in sport!
