Red Star Belgrade date from the time of communism in Yugoslavia, when like in other socialist/communist countries, everything worth anything simply had to be red. When you think of Red Star Belgrade you usually think of the football team, but Red Star is actually the name of a sporting association including sports ranging from athletics to basketball to volleyball to table tennis.

Still, the football team is the most famous. They have retained the name Red Star, but are now officially referred to by UEFA by the Serbian name Crvena Zvezda. This name is a mouthful for football commentators and everyone still calls them Red Star anyway.

Red Star's supporters' favourite pastime is exchanging taunts, blows and dangerous projectiles with fans of Partizan, the other major Belgrade football team. Partizan's stadium is a few hundred metres from Red Star's (called Marakana), so it is not surprising that derby matches are particularly eagerly awaited. In fact the twice-yearly fixture is known as the "veciti derbi" (eternal derby), and other notable reds that can be seen at these matches are red cards, flying red plastic seats, red flares and the blood of rival supporters flowing in the streets...
